Market day by helenhall

Market day

This is where I should have been, bright and early on Saturday morning before setting off out for the day - there were a couple of purchases to be made in readiness for our Sunday guests. however, my body and mind refused to co-operate and get out of bed early enough. So here is a picture taken last weekend.

In actual fact, last Saturday gave an easy opportunity to photograph the market since the canvas sides and covers had been largely abandoned on account of the high winds.

I have often tried to get a good angle on the market but given its proximity to a busy road, and the aforementioned canvas obstructions, I usually give up.

As a child, I remember painting a market scene which was a reproduction from an article in 'Pictorial knowledge' (the magazine which Dad ordered for us in preference to comics!) . I had never been particularly impressed with the painting myself, but for some reason it was the subject of rare praise from my father and it remained on display in our home for many years. It was a scene not dissimilar to this, with red and white awnings, hanging oranges , lots of handwritten prices on display and people busy shopping.
How lovely........it really captures the market atmosphere.

Great capture. There's so much to look at. I wasn't the only one not allowed to read comics then. I don't feel so deprived now! I'd love to see your childhood painting.

@chimfa I will have to see if it is lying around somewhere when I next go to Dads. I'm not too upset about the comic thing - one of many things thought to be far to frivolous in my childhood. We were without a television for the same reason for much of our childhood.
