I tried, but the more I looked in our Butterflies and Insects of Britain book, and online, the more confused I got. It looks like a damselfly but its wings are spread. I couldn't match it with any of the ones in the book. So it remains a UFO.
Took a sneaky peak round the back of the stands at the Birdfair yesterday to see what I could find out and about in the long grass, whilst Mr H was busy comparing the merits of varying ocular devises.
It looks to me as though it could possibly be a somewhat worn Emerald Damselfly ( see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lestes_sponsa )
However, I'm no expert but I do know that they rest with their wings partly open.
Great shot of it though and nice to see something a bit different as I've not seen one for ages.
@hazydaze thank you. I had wondered about the Emerald Damselfly. From wikipedia (which is not normally my first point of call) it seems to be easy to identify it as a mature male Lestes sponsa.
