Snakeshead Fritillary

I'm so glad to be back home in time to see all the Spring flowers in full bloom. We have a patch of these delicate creatures growing under the lime tree next to the drive. Some are white and others are this fabulous magenta colour. The pattern on the petals does look a little like snake scales (although much prettier than the large rat snake I came face to face with in Thailand; apparently not venomous!). They do grow wild in a few places in UK apparently but they are quite rare. The ones we have in our garden were planted by the former owners of this plot - a truly remarkable couple who have both now sadly died. I always think of them when the fritillaries flower - they only last a couple of weeks and are almost over - so I'm very happy to have caught their last few days.

I didn't take this on the trusty iPhone, as you can probably tell! A very kind (and perhaps slightly misguided , given my recent track record with cameras) friend has lent me one his 'spare' cameras - a Canon Ultrasonic - to try out while I decide what replacement to buy when/if the insurance money comes through). This camera is gorgeous but far too advanced for me - not to mention too heavy - I will definitely be looking for something smaller and lighter - and more practical for hen feeding/dog walking etc. But I will have fun playing with it for a few days!
i love the Snakeshead Fritillary, and this is a lovely pictre of one.

well well, I'd never seen these flowers before until my neighbour showed me a pot of them in her garden a few weeks ago, I actually remembered their name unlike most times people tell you the name of a flower and it's forgotten by the end of the conversation, maybe it was the snake thing that stuck!

To my recollection, I've bever seen this flower, and isn't it striking! You took such a good photo of it, I can really imagine the snake factor. I'm so glad you were home to see your flowers in bloom, and so sweetly remember those who planted them...

That's a beautiful flower, it has lovely, distinctive markings.
Re: Krabi, yes I climbed at Raylay, awesome views! I struggle to keep up with my kids already and they're only 10 and 8, 7.5m diving board anyone?

I've never seen such a flower, but being a technology resource teacher, the first thing I thought of when I looked closely at the flowers is that they look like digital pixels are making up this design.

Beautiful shot! Love these unusual flowers. Wonderful job of capturing the deep purple color.

These are beautiful flowers and I too have them in both the white and the maroon. They are months away from flowering for me however. They are a native to the UK and also they last over a week as a cut flower.
