Pigs Might Fly... by helenmoss

Pigs Might Fly...

I took the dogs for a walk during football practise in Willingham. I only intended a short stroll, but somehow I got into my stride and found myself halfway round a circular route to Over and back. It's about 4 miles - I know walking pace is meant to be 4 miles an hour, but you do have to be pretty brisk keep that pace up for several miles - especially factoring in time spent on (1) pulling wayward dogs out of large cowpats they feel compelled to roll in, (2) leaping into the hedgerow on the last section, to avoid boy racers using the straight fen road as their training ground for breaking the land speed record and (3) taking photos of airborne pigs!
I love it when people have straw animals made to adorn the top of their thatched cottages! There is actually a third pig on the other side of the chimney who looks as if he's running to catch up with the others, but I couldn't fit him in! I made it back just in time for the end of the football session and seconds before the rainstorm started.
No shadows today as skies are grey!
Wonderful find - I love this - FAV!

I wonder why they chose pigs, the 3 little pigs maybe but then the house built out straw burned down didn't it, or blew away or was it the wolf who Huffed and Puffed oh yes of course it was (will have to read that one again obviously!) I like the title, emphasis on the 'Might' !! I'm also imagining the request to the thatcher, "oh and did I mention the 3 pigs, if you would be so kind....?"

Elizabeth - thank you for posting this interesting link - it's fascinating - and amazingly, one of the of the links at the end of the article is the to Mizon family comapny - who are actually the people who re-thatched the cottage in our village which I photographed back in March ( http://365project.org/helenmoss/365/2010-03-11) - they were amazing and worked from dawn to dusk for weeks - it was a really privilege to watch such craftsmen at work - I was chatting to the owner of the cottage at the time and she said she'd been tempted to ask for a cat finial, but sadly they didn't!

This gives a whole new meaning to the old saying "When pigs fly".

Love your story- I love that there are still craftsmen (or women) that thatch. The pigs remind me of the wee guardian animals the Chinese put on the roofs of their temples.

When I read your title and looked at the picture my first thought was, "Tell me that's not a flying pig in the background!"
Really great photo - no thatched roofs here either and certainly nothing like pigs on the roof.
