Messing About on The River by helenmoss

Messing About on The River

It's the half-term holiday week and we went up to Nottingham to spend a few days on our narrowboat, Twilight (named before the Stephanie Meyer series came out, I should point out!!) The weather was hot and sunny - it was the most perfect few days. The top speed on a narrowboat is about 6 miles and hour. The canals and rivers flow gently through a mixture of interesting industrial architecture and beautiful countryside. Most of the time I walk along the towpath with the dogs while Mac mans the boat. The boys alternate between walking or cycling with me or sitting on the boat. Every now and then everyone has to leap into action (although at 4 miles and hour it's fairly gentle leaping!) to operate a lock so the boat can go up or down hill. It's heaven!
Nice picture. Sounds like a wonderful holiday.

Helen, I find this so very interesting!! So, you are on shore taking the picture of your boat and when needed, you hope on board?? This is a difficult concept for me but I sure would love to try it! We took our sailboat all up and down our Intracoastal Waterway here in the US and it was nothing like this! I want to go with you!! Is this a living boat or a day boat? ( do you have galley and head?) I love the look of it - what fun...goes under the low bridges. I am just all a twitter with this. More pictures please!!!

Mac looks very at home, but then I suppose he is sort of!! What a lovely thing to do ........I'm very jealous, might just have to have a tantrum! But then again while you were floating along and barging around (very slowly!) we had amazing weather and went to the best beach in the world just up the road, so can't grumble!!

You pinched my title!

This just sounds like such a wonderful family adventure. I have never heard the term "narrowboat" so wondering if that is a UK term? Keep in mind I know nothing about boats anyway so even if people in the US have "narrowboats" I have never heard of them! LOL
