We had planned a day out at the Tower of London before my brother and family went back to Thailand, and it was only by lucky good fortune that our visit coincided with one of the last days of the Bloodswept Lands and Seas of Blood poppy installation there. It was utterly stunning, especially as the sun broke through a heavy grey sky and lit the poppies up so that they glistened - beautifully, but unnervingly blood-ike. I'm not sure how much the children understood of the history, but I think it is something that they will remember for a long time.
