Full moon

Just wanted to see what my Canon SX220 could do (Canon announced a new sx240 today ;-) This shot of the moon is taken in manual mode, HAND HELD at max tele (392mm). Not bad for a compact camera.
"Not bad"? Fantastic! I never got such good results with my Nikon Coolpix - nowhere near!

WOW! I wish i had such a steady hand. The detail is amazing. Congratulations.

@carmel Ariel, thanks. The moon is quite small even with a 390mm zoom so this is tight crop. The SX220 is good and quite small. I have it in my pocket all the time and take most of my shots with it now. The new one has a zoom of 25 - 500mm plus promise to have less image noise. I want ;-)
@sheilacoates Sheila, I think it's more down to Canon's image stabilization system than my steady hands ;-)

magic Erik, just magic I am sure i can see the bunny in the moon

Beautiful shot - so much detail! Incredible that you did it without a tripod, even though you say is your "stabilization system" :)!

I don't get anything like that with my p&s and I have tried, I really have tried - great shot - you're doing a great job of selling the Canon compact

Oh wow oh wow!! That is just incredible.... I tried tonight and just got a lovely white globe but none of the details....don't know whether to cry or applaud! So crisp and clear, well done! :)

Hi Helge! Hope all is going well with you. Just wanted to tell you that I took the plunge and bought a Canon Powershot SX 230hs for my birthday last week :) I remembered being so impressed with your shots and the 2nd shot I took of it (the first was the desk) was the moon at full zoom! Really enjoying using it, though I have yet to master up-close, did you have a favourite setting for macro shots?
Seriously tempted by your canon sx40 and what it could do... but in the end my budget and the size of my handbag/pocket decided it for me!
Anyway - as you were the cause of all this I thought you should know!
Very best wishes :) Phil x

@helstor Wow Helge that shot of the bird is incredible - the light and pose were spot on but what amazing detail! I'm saving for a bigger handbag already..!!
You would have laughed if you had seen me tonight, by the computer, with camera at full zoom, trying to focus on my hand but looking like I was drunk and had lost my specs!! I like the idea though and will try it again. Haven't seen the 'handheld night shot' yet but will give it a look.
Hope the jobhunting is going ok? Thanks for the offer of more help... I'll keep your email address handy for this and any IT problems..!
Phil :)

@filsie65 Hi Phil, I think the focusing distance at full zoom is about 1 metre so you have to step back a bit ;-). You can get closer with the macro function... you have to experiment and see what you like best.

Cheers.

PS. I'm going to remove the post with my email address in it. Don't want the spammers to get hold of it.
