Belated

I got my poppy from the VFW late yesterday, so I didn't use it as a proper photo on Veterans Day, but here it is, a day late. :)

As a side note, I am finally becoming comfortable with Hipstamatic and am strangely obsessed. My Holga takes better quality photos, as funny as that is. I guess, deep down, I am just a hipster...

Taken with an Apple iPhone 4, Hipstamatic (Lucifer VI lens, Ina's 1969 film)
really nicely done.. love the red and pink hues melting into one another

Three years ago I was a college student at UNC Wilmington, working on my Film Studies degree. During my senior year I started working as the photographer for the Athletic Department. UNC Wilmington was a small school (14,000 students) so they'd never had a staff photographer for the Athletics Department before.

Well, I *really* got into the swing of things during the basketball season. It was kinda stupid, but they had five games for both the men and women during the Christmas break. I returned to shoot those games. Then the men traveled to play UVA for a big, big game on January 1.

It snowed the day they got there. I mean huge blizzard. So bad they couldn't even get out of the hotel to make it to the coliseum for practice. Well, so far all the photos on the athletics department's website had been mine. Then I logged on January 3 to do some work and BHAM there was a photo of snow piled atop the university's bus. The Athletic Director, Joe, called me later that afternoon.

"Jason, wish you could have been here with us. The guys were playing in the snow, the coach slipped on ice and was laughing his ass off. But don't worry, I found a kid with an iPhone and bought a photo from him."

Are you freakin' kidding me? Since then, I've noticed that not only as the iPhone camera gotten better and the apps more popular, but magazines, newspapers, and even advertisers are starting to consider iPhonography a competition to DSLRography.

OK...sorry for the big story! Pretty good photo. It has a dreamy affect to it and fits the mood of the holiday perfect.

@jasonbarnette I remember the big hoopla a few years ago when someone won a huge contest with a war photo taken with HIpstamatic. It is definitely becoming a lot more popular. A few years ago I bought a D80 as my "point and shoot" to put in my purse (D300 with grip was just too heavy). Now I rarely use any of my DSLRs because the iPhone is just so much easier to carry and actually can capture good photos (hipster apps or not). Definitely a sign of changing times... naturally I wouldn't shoot any of my pro/paid/important stuff with an iPhone, so the DSLRs have their place (don't think the phone can hang with auto racing...). Proper equipment will always have their place. I do admit I feel bad for all the film in my freezer, since iPhone has replaced my need for medium format photography that I usually did with my Holga.

@hmgphotos The other day I posted a photo of a long exposure shot of water rushing under a pier. I had mentioned how with the popularity of camera phone and P&S cameras that it was becoming increasingly difficult for a travel photographer to make a living.

Just like you said the iPhone is great but has limits. No matter how good it gets, the iPhone won't be doing long exposures in full sunlight or shooting light trails or lightning.

I also used to use my D80 as my "P&S" until it fell off a pier during a hurricane haha. I miss having that camera. But I really, really want a Mamiya 645 so I can shoot medium format. Like really want. More than I want an iPhone :P

@jasonbarnette I think if I had a proper MF camera I would shoot more film... the Holga gets a bit repetitive and limited after awhile, though it does take surprising good photos.
