Pile of Beetles

Walking through the park, saw this pile of beetles sitting on the railing. They all seemed alive. I have no idea what they are, or what they were doing there...but it was, well, "different."
I'm afraid I would find this quite upsetting if I came upon it, but they make for an interesting photo! Great composition.

Certainly interesting. Perhaps they are about to infest some local plant.

I'm intrigued. I wonder what they were eating.

Apparently they are boxelder bugs, that are gathering looking for a safe place to hide over the winter.

OK, I'm kind of interested and kind of not. I'm fascinated by the image and story, I just don't like to think about things like this for too long!

@peadar Oh, I agree. I snapped two shots and then moved on as quickly as possible But those were the only two shots of the day, so...bugs it is!

They are very similar to the milk weed bugs we had in the Midwest. Those migrate. In the fall, they covered out house. It was so gross. But, my boys loved it. Some always ended up inside and they'd get very excited to find one in the middle of winter to play with.

They look like young ones, not yet adults, perhaps still hanging out together for safety in numbers? A great find anyway!
