Rainbow Bee-eater in the sand dunes

Bee-eater? How brave. Beautiful colours standing out of the sand dunes.

That seems an unexpected spot to see a bee eater. Wonderful capture.

@littleconnie Connie your comment caused me to do a bit of research. And it appears if I had looked more carefully i would have seen a hole nearby. They dig a nest in these dunes tunnelling back up to a meter where they lay 3 to 4 eggs. I noticed a pair..and they were constantly darting around catching insects. So I will go back and see if I can see them again..and the nesting hole...from a respectful distance.

I've never seen a bird like that -- it's beautifully marked and so well captured.

@hrs The things you learn because of photography. I hope you manage to locate their nesting hole and with any luck some baby bee eaters.

@taffy we only see them each spring @littleconnie haven't found them...but you are right...this forum enlarges our scope @terryliv Yes Terry...just north of the main surfing beach. They come each year...but I hadn't realised the nest in the dunes @helenhall thank you
