Thank you all for your comments and thoughts, and to those of you who said 'wow', that really does sum up what it looked like. Perhaps what was most amazing was the speed at which the colour developed and disappeared - less than 5 minutes! Only 3 minutes after this shot was taken, the sky had reverted to a more normal grey.

Thank you Brian - the only change made on the computer was to reduce the size. The colour really was that strong. Interestingly, someone had sent a very similar shot to the local tv station for the weather forecast, and the forecaster commented on the depth of colour on that evening's sky.
