Three of the smaller south islands are connected to the mainland by the Churchill Barriers - causeways built by Italian POWs during WW2 to stop the German Fleet from gaining entry to Scapa Flow. In very bad weather they are closed because of the dangers of several tonnes of water smashing into your car. Well there have been whales off Burray one of the islands that you cross the barriers to reach so I thought I'd go there a drive. I didn't see any whales and after 10 minutes realised I wasn't too bothered and would rather drive back and watch the waves. I knew the tide was rising and it would only get worse so thought I'd better get back .. just as well as not long after I took this photo the barriers were indeed closed.
Excellent shot. Love the white of the spray heading over the barrier. I googled Scapa Flow and had such an interesting read, you live in an incredible part of the world.
Glad you turned back - looks a bit hairy.
