Land of the midnight sun

Day eighteen of 30 days wild

This was taken just before 11pm as we waited to board the ferry to travel overnight from Orkney to Shetland. We were treated to the most amazing sunset with some fantastic clouds and colours.

We could still see a tiny bit of the setting sun at 12.30am as we sailed out of Kirkwall Harbour.

We spent the day exploring the beach and cliffs near where we'd been staying. We found sand martins nesting there and flying around at such great speed, they were impossible to photograph!
Beautiful sky and reflection

It is mind blowing to think of this light at 11pm to one who has not been to those parts of the world. Beautiful.

Absolutely beautiful. It looks so peaceful. How nice to have a sunset at almost midnight. It gets dark here at 5 pm now we are in winter.

I have always thought that 11-00 ferry was a silly time to leave Kirkwall, but at this time of the year it does have it's advantages. This fabulous scene for instance. Did you stay awake on deck to watch the twilight ?
