These are the standing stones at Callanish, a central circle of 13 stones with avenues leading off north, south, east and west. It resembles a Celtic cross, but the stones were raised more than 4,000 years ago, long before the birth of Christ.
There are many theories about the site, each creates more questions than can ever be answered. My favourite is they were for charting events in the lunar and solar calendar - but if they were waiting for a significant event in the skies, such a particular position of the moon that only happens once every 19 years, could they have completely missed it if it was cloudy??
We'd been advised to go here late in the day as it's often very busy with visitors. I think we timed it just right, it was pouring with rain by the time we got here and there was no-one else around. We left drenched and full of our own theories about stone circles, the universe and everything.
How intriguing -- it looks at once, natural and unnatural, leaving viewers to ponder, too. Good for the rain --- nobody in sight, and the air full of mystery too.
