I think that everyone is looking for a magic pill to cure what ails them, be it life, a situation, a better job, a better body. I think American's can fall into this category easily, but that it's not really limited to them in general. Most modernized societies are seemingly always on the lookout to increase productivity, life span, 'quality' of life... and all those things that are twisted in the perception and search for what is perfection.

But, that's just me.
