I brought along my D60 and handed it to the husband when he came along with me on a sunset shoot. I had fun watching him to see what he was going to take pictures of... And there is a funny story behind it all -

He wanted to use my camera to take pictures for our fifth grader's science fair project. I got the D60 out and handed it to him saying, as he was walking away, "Be sure you switch it to AUTO so you don't have to mess with the settings." He replied, "Yeah, yeah... I got it." Ten minutes later, he barged into the room and interrupted my phone call with a scowl on his face and said, "I need your help! None of my pictures are showing up." I had a look and his pictures were showing up... they were just completely black. So, I looked to make sure he had turned the dial to Auto. And there it was, very clearly on 'M'. So, before I pointed out what was wrong, I asked him if he remembered me telling him to switch it to auto. He said yes and I asked him why it wasn't on auto then. He said, "I did! Look!" and he showed me on the side of the lens where he had switched the focus to auto. ......I took a deep breath and said, "No, that is for the lens. You need to set the camera to auto." I did, took a quick pic of the dog, and showed him the screen, "See, it works now." He grunted a thank you and left. I'll admit, I had a good chuckle after he walked out.

Fast forward to the night this pic was taken. When we got back home I looked through his pictures...most of which were way, way too over exposed. I didn't say anything... until he asked me about them. I said, "They look good but are a little bright." He replied, "Whaaat?? I even made sure it was on auto." So, I picked up the camera and, sure enough, he had turned the dial to 'A'. ;) I then took the time to explain exactly where auto is located on the dial...

Anyhow, this was one of the pics his took. I was aimed at catching the falling sun's reflection in the water... and he caught mine. Since my reflection was upside down, I have flipped it and darkened it up some. ;) I think the illusion is neat... Not bad. He definitely gets an 'A' for effort. ;)
At least he is showing an interest. Good reflection capture. My husband won't even attempt to use the camera unless it's to take a pic of me...and then it is always too far away. Can't get him to move closer. Ha Ha

Fav! And what a hilarious story! Oh my gosh, I'm smiling because it reminds me of how stupid I've been with my D60 as well. Live and learn. Thanks for taking the time to share your anecdote.

If only they listened! But I have to say this is a very cool picture. I think he has the eye and you have some company.

@henrir @jameshislop @amandal @theboxman @glyn @http365proj @ledphoto @thresheg @kareenking @dora - Thank you! I would love for him to join me more often but he has expressed to me that it is much more enjoyable for him to watch me in action than to shoot along side me. And it's not just a way to get out of spending time with me. He genuinely enjoys being my sidekick on my shoots... just not behind the camera. He loves to drive me to places he has seen and wants me to shoot and has been known to call me from the car on his way in to tell me to grab my camera because he just saw something I need to shoot. He'll text me early in the morning to alert me of a beautiful setting moon or rising sun... and he is willing to drive me where I want to go, always asking to make sure I brought my camera, even on a drive to the grocery store... Because my passion runs so deep, I don't understand why he doesn't just want to pick up a camera himself. Who doesn't love that, right??? ;) But I am grateful that he realizes how important it is to me and wants to be a part of it in his own way. We actually took a photography class together in high school... That was 24 years ago... wow...

You have the best of both worlds, someone who not only supports you but has the eye too. And you have ten beautiful kids to photograph, no wonder you have a passion for photography. Love your photos
