One evening, about 27 years ago, something caught my eye just beyond my bedroom window. I walked outside to have a closer look and there, in the flag holder that was attached to my window frame, was a carnation and a sweet note from a boy I knew. The notes and little surprises continued over a period of time... not long by adult standards, but it was a good and impressionable amount of time when both parties are 14 years old. Nothing much ever became of it and, eventually, we went different directions. Although we completed the rest of our school years together, because of hurt feelings, we rarely spoke. Time seemingly flew by and, just a couple of years ago, we had the chance to catch up with each other. We had good laughs, gave long overdue apologies and then, once again, went our own ways. The night before last, he left this world. It was a shock. And it is heartbreaking. But, no matter how far away his direction takes him this time, we will all forever have him in our hearts and memories. He will always be a son... a brother... a friend... a love... And, to me, he will always be the boy who left me carnations. Rest peacefully, my friend. You will be missed.
What a touching story to correspond with this photo. I love how you've set up the photo with the snow on the carnation and the sunset in the background.
A very beautiful shot and a heartrending story to go with it. I'm so glad you managed to get together again and reconcile past differences. This is a fav for me.
