If you build it, they will come... For the past few weeks, and for first time in 8 years, I have been seeing blue jays dart overhead. So, I read up on how to attract them, bought some peanuts, and they are here. I can see why they are labeled as aggressive... they scare away the grackles and doves. And even swooped down to peck at the squirrel as he frantically stole peanut after peanut and buried them all over the yard. They are a beautiful bird and I am happy to have them. However, should they not behave, I will simply go outside and tell them I will take their peanuts away if they can't share. Surely they'll listen, right? ;)
Fantastic shot. Yes the jays do seem to be bullies at the feeder and they are so much larger than the other birds that frequent my feeder but...they are so pretty, and I've found that they tend to only hang around for a brief time (probably till the peanuts run out!) and then will take off and leave the smaller birds to enjoy their seeds in peace, so I've learned to live with their bullying ways.
