This Cooper's Hawk has been visiting me a lot recently. I know why he's here but have never actually seen him catching or eating anything. He just sits and looks. I believe he is a juvenile so maybe he is just fine tuning his skills? Either way, it is always fun to see him. :)
A real stunner. I followed a nest of them this summer, and it explained why my favorite bird catching spot rarely included the small song birds! I even found a decapitated raccoon under the tree. Caught them several times with food and eating their meals right on the tree--then cleaning themselves afterwards. The nest high in pine trees where the trees are slightly isolated or in the middle of a field. I suspect they will return to the nesting spot next year!
I agree - I love seeing hawks up close and yep, Coopers are famous for being feeder watchers - glad you haven't seen him in action though haha, but what a beautiful bird. I love raptors.
