Blue door and rust streaks by ivan

Blue door and rust streaks

Detail from a beach hut - don't we love those beach huts! Another late post, at the end of what became a rather dispiriting day, let's see what tomorrow will bring forth.

Interesting reactions re the PP discussion initiated by Zambian Lass. What comes through is that getting on PP is nice but for many not so important as sharing images, having friends through 365, and learning more about photography. What also became clear in that Discussion thread is that PP is far from perfect, and even having 30 favs doesn't guarantee selection for PP. I've never had anything like that number, though I have had a few pictures on PP - usually others have told me of this - the appearances have been so fleeting I must have blinked and missed them!

I like to have meaningful contact with my Friends, I found even 50 too many to manage well, so I try to keep this around 40. Then I can communicate sufficiently on our images, which I enjoy doing. Sometimes briefly, here and there at more length, depending on the topic and the picture.

I really like the fact I can have photo friends in the UK and around the world. I've always enjoyed communicating, sometimes more than picture taking and making - can I say that on a photographic site?! (I do enjoy using PS though!)

Favs I tend to give if I'd like to see an image again, if it has that something extra, or if there is something intrinsically interesting about the picture. The background story can count for me too - I like a good story, and that's another reason for limiting the number of Friends, so I have time to read what someone has kindly taken the time to set out re the image they are posting, or something of their lives at that time.

Hazel and others stated very well on my picture page yesterday the special qualities of 365project, which distinguish it from other photo social media.

It's now after midnight, so for two days running I've missed posting on the day, because I've been typing stuff like this! Now I realise the one aimed for the 23rd actually registered for the 24th - so there is a blank for the 23rd. This one is now for the 25th July. Don't think I'll bother to fill in the blank day! Take care.
Lovely texture and colours.

I love this photo...the blue door is so striking and the white/rust really sets it off. The composition is great too! Also....I totally agree with every word you wrote above!! Thank you for saying it so well!!!
July 25th, 2013
Great shot, Ivan - love the processing/editing.
July 25th, 2013
@gamelee Thank you very much, Lee.
July 25th, 2013
@gooner46 Thank Chris, appreciated. Bon Voyage!
July 25th, 2013
@eyesmile Much appreciate your kind comments on the image, I like these selective bits of things, graphical. Thanks also for your nice observations re my Discussion piece - a bit long, I thought!
July 25th, 2013
The I am not really up on the politics of 365 and had no idea what PP was. Are you notified if a photo is chosen? How would you know? I just enjoy looking at 'friends's" posts and particularly like the fact that people participate from around the world and different parts of the UK. I seem to
give quite a few Favs - if I think it is good photo, an interesting subject, a quirky piece of work or it makes me smile. I think 365 is an amazing site. Congratulations to Ross.

Fabulous composition Ivan, I love photos like this with lovely textures and I love the colours and processing too!

I did manage to read the discussion concerning PP and found it very interesting too! As you know we have had this discussion between ourselves before and I enjoy looking at the PP page because I have discovered new friends through it but I won't say any more on the matter now.

I think the favourite fav thread on Friday is an excellent way of seeing others work too and also looking at the Day photos too! I found someone from Hove yesterday by looking at a tags page.

I have followers who very rarely comment on my photos and I have noticed if you miss days and then put your photos on you only get a handful of comments. I think my mistake is trying to go back over my friends photos and making comments on all their photos and it just takes too long. I am now going to comment as when I can and hopefully get around to all. I was a great believer that if you follow someone you make a comment but I have found this not to be. I do love how this site shares its photographic knowledge with others and how willing people are to give this information.

I am also a member of Flickr and have made some excellent friends through that too.
July 25th, 2013
@gooner46 I think 365 is excellent too. But clearly there are misgivings re how PP=Popular Page operates. See also yesterday's post: http://365project.org/discuss/general/18653/amazing-photos-that-never-make-the-pp As I say, the really nice and important thing for me and many -and you - is seeing Friends pictures, communicating with them worldwide. But PP is a nice feature, many take an interst in it But it needs to work fairly and accurately, not in a random fashion, which seems the case with some images. For PP go to Browse at top of page, drop-down menu, Popular. BTW I didn't understand it at first, then Hazel and Elaine explained what PP was, how it should work.
July 25th, 2013
Ivan I think PP works in a similar fashion to Flickr's Explore. This has one explanation if you are interested in looking http://www.steves-digicams.com/knowledge-center/how-tos/online-sharing-social-networking/flickr-explore-what-is-it.html#b

I think timing has a great deal to do with it too!
July 25th, 2013
I love this door, Ivan, but I also love your comment. I feel bad when people feel slighted for not making PP, as if the lovely comments and favs aren't enough. I, too, have tried to limit the number of people I follow so that I can keep up. I'd love to follow more, but I'd be overwhelmed by that. I'm just happy to be here, amongst people who don't roll their eyes when I show them my latest and greatest shot!! :o)
July 25th, 2013
@elaine55 Thanks for your very nice comments re the image, Elaine. Hope you are feeling a lot better.

Thank you also for your comments on the PP thing. I think it is this doubt that it operates fairly that is at the root of the concerns and led to Zambian Lass starting that Discussion thread. The comments there and on my pages have been very interesting.

I think you have to do what you can manage to do re comments on postings etc. And I think that non-current postings do get missed. People aren't monitoring the Home tab all the time, and don't have time to go back to check on each of their Friends in case they have posted retrospectively. If you miss some, c'est la vie! never mind! No point in chaining yourself to the 365 = one year constraint. Just keep posting till you have done 365 images or until you feel you have done enough. I don't think anybody checks up on you! It's the sharing process that seems the most enjoyable and that need have no time constraints - probably best to avoid big gaps if you can.
I've got many Followers I never hear from as well - that's how it is, a shame, but their choice, not yours. I have a few people I have good rapport with, enjoy seeing heir pictures, reading their notes. That's sufficient for me, I decided a little while ago. Take good care of yourself.

A very interesting image --we all love the rows of brightly coloured beach huts They always create a nostalgia -- for some reason !! Love your capture & editing It really brings home the effect of the elements on the materials & objects . It looks as if this hut was once blue all over as the blue shows through where the wear & tear & the salty sea air has worn away the paint & the iron nails & other bits & pieces have rusted creating another colour to the scene !!
Like you I love the friendship, friendly comments & banter , the gentle learning & improving on one;s photography , and gaining interesting knowledge on all sort of subjects !! As for the PP I am thrilled when it happens to me --but there is no rhyme or reason to how it works !! and really I do not find it that important --constructive comments are appreciated so much more ! Shall get off my soap box now !!!!
July 25th, 2013
@carolb Thanks Carol re the image and also for your other comments on the PP thing. Agree with all you say, sharing images, communicating with a nice community is paramount. PP nice but not so important in the great scheme of things. Love your changed thumbnail, you have a lovely rubbery nose and super white whiskers! :)
July 25th, 2013
Only one more side thought....I did find the PP page extremely helpful when I first started this project....I didn't really know where to begin to find all the fabulous photographers I have been following! I still like to look in because even though I don't think I can mange too many more I like seeing the incredible images available for viewing.
July 25th, 2013
Thanks Ivan, I do feel better as I stopped the medication but am slowly introducing it again and hoping the side effects won't come back.
July 25th, 2013
@beryl Thank you Beryl, those beach huts are nostalgic, you are right! Maybe memories of the seaside as a child, or even some atavistic memory - who knows?

You will have seen what I have written in my posting and to others, and the Discussion started by Zambian Lass. I do have a strong scientific streak, which wants to understand and which needs rational explanation, even at my age and stage! And if something which obviously people are interested in and which they think is an arithmetical process - turns out it isn't, it has random aspects to its selections - then I think it should be put right. Or we're told it's not strictly how many favs which get an image on PP.

But enough of all this! As Zebedee - that wise old chap on a spring - said: "Time for bed!" Now the Magic Roundabout really was magic and we knew it was magic! Nothing rational about that. Totally unpredictable, anything could - and often did - happen! Thanks for writing.
July 25th, 2013
@eyesmile Yes, I agree. Latest can also be interesting, I specially like people who post nice images of places, where they live etc., found some Friends that way. You can also do it by Tags, say if you are interested in certain subjects or are looking for a Friend in a particular place - not a perfect method, but a guide. Now I have friends in most places I am interested in worldwide, which is nice. Take care.
July 25th, 2013
@elaine55 Hope it works for you, Elaine.
July 25th, 2013
@elaine55 Thanks for the Flickr link/explanation, Elaine. I also think timing affects things. But I was amazed when I read in that Discusiion thread last night that there are groups of people who belong to Flickr trying to work out how to get their images into some prestigious placing on that site. Like trying to crack the code of the relevant software. Amazing!
July 25th, 2013
Love the blue door and detail in this shot Ivan.
July 25th, 2013
Yes..I do like that new "latest" browse button too! Took me a while to navigate around the system...but I am a slow learner! :) Appreciate your time invested in this discussion...and on your home page too! :)
July 25th, 2013
Oh.I was thinking of the "suggestion browse button"...
July 25th, 2013
@ivan Yes Ivan if is crazy what some people will do! I have been in Explore a few times on Flickr and was amazed on one photo that I got to no. 4 with, I personally thought it was an okay photo but I didn't think it was anything special. I do have a friend here in Oz that is often on Explore, she is a bird photographer and her photos are incredible so I can see why they make it but some on Explore, as I think Alexis said about the Fridge pic, are awful! I believe they climb the table through views and not necessarily comments or favs and if you put them in groups to get more views they drop. It has certainly started an interesting debate.

I find the knowledge gained on how to do different photographic things on this site is more important and the friendship.
July 25th, 2013
@ivan My lovely rubbery nose and whiskers! Ivan, you actually made me, well, if I was younger I would have giggled. As I am now 50, I just enjoyed a deep chuckle. Thank you for that!
July 25th, 2013
Love that blue. It really stands out
July 25th, 2013
nice!!
July 25th, 2013
When I travel I have a subset theme - in Spain I did doors. Love this one.
July 25th, 2013
Ivan, this is such a beautiful image. Thank you for your thoughtful comments about the 365 and PP.
July 25th, 2013
Love the composition and color here, fav
Great conversation on this "thread" too.
PP really is kind of crazy, but not quite random. I think top 20 is a better set to follow.
July 25th, 2013
A really great composition and a fav
July 25th, 2013
Exquisite capture, Ivan. Great composition and tones.
July 25th, 2013
Very striking photo Ivan - lovely collection of colour and textures
July 25th, 2013
Wonderful textures and colours Ivan, I agree with what you say, I like to get on PP but its not the important thing with 365 with me. When I see some of the Brilliant Photo's on PP I still think I have still a lot to do to get a Brilliant photo like some these.
July 25th, 2013
Sorry Ivan that you had a dispiriting day and I hope today will be less so. Like your beach hut shot - what a peculiarly British item they are! We have some nice rows of them here, all dark green, in Lee on Solent.
Do post on the missing day - would like to see what it is! You started quite a discussion here - but I shall not add any more as I've had my penn'orth! Oh you mentioned magic roundabout - we have a real magic roundabout here in Eastleigh - well it's my name for it as it's magic when you can whizz round it easily! One thing which has struck me is that it's possible you and Tina and Ray and myself might meet up sometime as we are not a million miles apart.......
July 25th, 2013
love the colours and textures in this beautiful shot!
July 25th, 2013
Stunning composition - I chased PP for a while - it can be fun - I've been there over a dozen times. But I don't chase PP anymore and I enjoy this site much more now.
July 25th, 2013
That is great Ivan ! Cool details !
July 25th, 2013
@carolb :-) (Hope that's the right symbol! - I don't do txting! - bit of a dino! Love my PC though, and Photoshop and Nik software and ProShow Producer, it's an AV programme pictures, music, sound effects - brilliant!)
July 25th, 2013
@http365proj Thank you very much, Shirley.
July 25th, 2013
@eyesmile Thank you :)
July 25th, 2013
@bkbinthecity Yes, thank you, pleased you liked it.
July 25th, 2013
@workinprogress2 Thank you:)
July 25th, 2013
@mariael I love doors too, did a lot in s. Germany once - thank you.
July 25th, 2013
@cathieg Thank you Cathie, it has been a very interesting Discussion, thank you.
July 25th, 2013
@tigerdreamer Thank you very much, Karen, appreciated. I've now read the link that Elaine sent and understand a bit more - viewings also come into it - feel some explanation of PP, how it determines images that go on there, should appear on the PP page.. Obviously a fair number of 365ers are interested. Then we wouldn't think it either logical or random.
July 25th, 2013
@thresheg Very kind, thank you for your nice comments and the fav.
July 25th, 2013
@sangwann Thank you very much, Dionne.
July 25th, 2013
@zambianlass Thank you very much, appreciate your nice comments. I expect you have seen the various comments re PP on here and yesterday. You started quite a debate. An explanation of PP on that page would help, I think, so we don't think it's luck!
July 25th, 2013
@tonygig Thank you Tony, and for your interest in the PP debate.
July 25th, 2013
@quietpurplehaze Thank you, Hazel. Today is marginally better - unfortuanetly Tina's dad is back in hospital, sad in itself, but all that happened after he came out, failure by social services of promised support, discharging him when he couldn' walk or look after himself in any way - now he's back but in a pretty miserable ward - it's all been very frustrating and depressing. Now he also accepts the best option is a care home, but first we have to await an assessment under the care legislation, so we know what level of care home he needs.

We would love to meet up with you and Ray, lovely idea. Let us get through this difficult period - we have cancelled two holidays since Christmas and been postponing going away all summer. Then we can decide how we do it, it would be very nice to meet up.
July 25th, 2013
@angelat Thank you very much.
July 25th, 2013
@gmost Thank you, Glenn.
July 25th, 2013
@ivan

I'm very sorry to hear of the ongoing difficulties that Tina's dad is facing - it somehow begins to seem like a sadly familiar tale. Let's hope the situation will be resolved and improve soon. When you feel ready, you say the word re meeting.
July 25th, 2013
@quietpurplehaze Thanks Hazel.
July 25th, 2013
@soboy5 Pleased you like the picture. Note what you say re PP - and agree the community of friends on 365 is by far the best thing about it. The Discussion, started by Zambian Lass, has been very interesting.
July 25th, 2013
Ian
This is another really nice image, I like the composition, colour and sense of texture.
July 25th, 2013
Bob
Nice composition and color. I enjoyed your comments and those of everybody else. I also limit my contacts and try to comment appropriately. Dialog like this will put you way behind if done often. lol
July 25th, 2013
A beautifully sharp clear image with beautiful colours and textures. You've certainly started an interesting discussion among your followers, and I agree with what you and others have written. I follow a few people whose shots I don't comment on because I l try to learn from their superb photos and feel comments from an amateur like me are probably unnecessary. Then there are others I follow who never ever respond to comments, and there are those who follow me and never comment. So I'm glad to have a core of people like you that I can interact with. I really appreciate the time and trouble you give to commenting on my photos; it's clear you look at them and don't simply dash off a one-word response.
July 25th, 2013
Love the comp. great colors and textures. Love rust and blue!
July 25th, 2013
I agree with you about the amount of followers If there are to many I`ve to be brief. I try to reply whenever they send me a comment.
After 2 months of not receiving a pic. without knowledge I remove them from following. It keep the list shorter.
You pic is beautiful. Love all the colors and textures. Fav.
July 25th, 2013
Great shot Ivan. Love the colours, the lines and angles. An observation I made on the PP; the numer of favs you need to get on there seems to be linked to how many followers you have. I notised that I needed to get 5 favs in a relatively short period of time to have a shot on the PP. I've got more followers as a result of being on the PP, so I probably need even more favs now.... victim of my own success ;-))
July 25th, 2013
Bep
Love your beach hut picture, Ivan.
July 25th, 2013
@streats Thank you Ian, much appreciate your nice comments.
July 25th, 2013
@bobhuegel Thank you Bob re the image. The Discussion was very interesting, glad I assited what Zambian Lass had begun. You are right, so I won't be starting another debate just yet! Lol
July 25th, 2013
@dolphin Thank you, Molly, for being so appreciative and informative. The discussion has brought out many interesting and valid views. 365project facilitates an excellent community, interested in photography but with good rapport with each other too. It is good to be able to look at each other's pictures and correspond on them, .
July 25th, 2013
@stimuloog Thank you very much, Marloes, glad you enjoyed this image.
July 25th, 2013
@pyrrhula Thank you, Ferry, it is interesting to hear how you organise your Friends, others do similarly. You have a good method, I think. Pleased you like the image, thank you very much for the fav.
July 25th, 2013
@helstor Thank you, Helge, very nice comments. The whole PP business seems complicated. I would like an explanation for all on the PP page of how the images are selected. I wish you well with your images and Followers!
July 25th, 2013
@gijsje Thank you very much, bep.
July 25th, 2013
