We attended a Burns Supper last night, and I gave a speech to the Immortal Memory of the Scottish Bard. As a thank you, I was given this beautiful posy of flowers.
Today we celebrate Burns' birthday. Here's a verse from my favourite of his poems 'Ae Fond Kiss', written for his sweetheart Nancy as she left on a steamer for Jamaica :
Had we never lov'd sae kindly!
Had we never lov'd sae blindly!
Never met - or never parted,
We had ne'er been broken hearted.
Spending half of each year in Nova Scotia, we know a thing or two about Scotland & have a good friend there, a Scotsman who's a marvelous balladeer. I love your beautiful bouquet, and find pleasure in thinking of you fitting so tidily in your new home! And that poem...an very favourite of mine as well... I copied it into a book of favourite poems when I was still in my teens...
You mentioned awhile back about working on a speech; glad to know it went well. Lovely flowers given to you of which you've made a pretty picture for sharing.
A wonderful poet and one of my favourites, roughly contemporary with Mozart, my favourite composer. Beautiful capture of your lovely bouquet, fav for me.
@pixiemac The flowers are beautiful indeed Sarah, and I was really chuffed to have been given them. The colours were so perfect with my background tartan rug too. Sea holly is one of my favourite winter flowers - so like the thistle that it's perfect for reminding me of Scotland too! :-)
