Granny Duff by jamibann

Granny Duff

This is just a photo journal shot, as it is far from the best, photographically speaking. However, I wanted to share it.

Whilst sorting through stuff in our house (I'm gradually getting through it ...), I came across this Petit Larousse encyclopaedia, presented to my granny (my dad's mum) in 1915. She received it for excellence in class subjects (but only second = place) at the Aberdeen High School for Girls. She won the school dux in 1917, and I also have that medal sitting on a shelf.

I can't get over the fact that this book is over a hundred years old, and it's sitting, in good condition, on my bookshelf, along with a 2008 version which I bought for my daughter when she was attending a French school.

After graduating from Aberdeen University, my granny became a teacher, working for years in the south of Scotland until she married and moved back nearer to home in Midmar where she and granda ran a farm for many years. My dad and his sister were born and brought up on that farm. They eventually sold up due to granda's ill health, and granny took a job as headmistress at Inchmarlo Primary School, very near to where we now live. She was in her mid-fifties when she took on that job, and granda, very modern for those days (early fifties), kept the house and did all the cooking and shopping whilst granny ran the school.

Charming glimpse of your family history - thanks for sharing.

What a fantastic overlapping of history and all the connections affirming your latest move. Wouldn't your young granny be astonished at the way the family story/history has developed.....or maybe not astonished...maybe just delighted.
Very special photo!
