Yesterday was the first time we've seen one of these at our bird feeder. We keep chicken wire around the feeder, as otherwise the crows eat the lot. It works fine, and the little birds come in from underneath. Here's hoping that Mr Woodpecker will become a regular visitor.
Chicken wire - now that's a good idea! We had to put our feeder away because it was inundated with big fat pigeons who made a dreadful mess and magpies. All the blue tits and other small birds never got a look in. But this is an interesting thought.....
Love seeing your wildlife.
A lovely sight on your feeder. We have been wondering why ours empties so fast given that we almost never see any bird on it. This morning through the kitchen window I saw why - it had a long tail, two ears, beady eyes....... That's the end of bird feeding in our garden!
Good idea with the chicken wire, but I think you would need a sniper with an AK-47 to keep some of our birds away from the feeder. ha ha The cockatoos and corellas are pretty determined to keep the lorikeets away,
@casablanca@merrelyn@happypat@quietpurplehaze@sarah19 I can't claim the idea to be mine. I was in our local Deli the other week and commented that I don't buy peanuts for the birds any more because I end up just feeding all the big crows and pigeons and the little birds don't get a look in. The lady there said they used chicken wire. I was sceptical, but mentioned it to hubby who rigged up a temporary contraption, which definitely works. We left it open at the bottom, but closed around and on top. It just hangs on the branch with a long stick, fed through the wire and the feeder. The crows tried hard initially, but soon gave up. The little birds use it regularly. Hubby is at pains to point out that this one is temporary and that he's going to make a more 'professional' and better looking one - once the new bit of garden fence is up - our next project!
@onewing Ha ha ... hubby does threaten to do something similar to our pigeons who poo everywhere and the crows who scare off the little birds off and make an awful lot of noise!
Love seeing your wildlife.
Great to share useful ideas on here. Keep cosy this weekend!!
I feel sure that little rat would crack that one - unfortunately!
