A Gathering of Cairns

You have them there I see. Nice red ones.

Cairns are the way that people navigate a trail across a rock base. I like the focal depth, keeping the main cairn in focus and the smaller ones behind out of focus. Good picture.

Looks like you couldn't walk far without bumping into one.

@bigdad Judging by the number of cairns in this shot, an awful lot of people must have been getting lost.

Lovely clarity, they make nice shapes for cairns.

Thank you for your comments about my photo of the gathering of cairns. In this circumstance, I don't think there is much controversy, but in other situations, there certainly is. Some say any disturbance to the environment is upsetting. Others say rock stacking is an art. Most agree that they are helpful to find trails, but in this case, these were not needed for that. The worse thing I've ever heard is from our ranger son who also works as an Emergency Medical Technician. Someone in one of the national parks moved a cairn to set people off in the wrong direction. On a very hot day, a hiker died following those "gag" cairns.

Yup, a man is gone because kids moved some rock cairns. Senseless.
