Giant Hog Weed in the Gibberd Garden by janek

Giant Hog Weed in the Gibberd Garden

photo 377
I came across this giant on our visit to the Gibberd Garden (see yesterday's posting). A health hazard and an invasive alien but magnificent none the less. Giant hogweed can grow up to 3-5 metres tall, with individual umbels measuring up to half a metre across and leaves up to 2 metres across.

Love the way you caught this with the sky showing us the interesting structures! I think it can be quite harmful if your skin touches it! I remember in our last house there was a huge poster with warnings on the utility room door when we moved in. Thankfully didn't find any!

I like the angle of this shot. It reminds me of the book 'The Day of the Triffids' which frightened me to death.

@sarah19 @jtookey150 Thanks for taking the time to comment - much appreciated. This was the only angle I could take this from without a 15 foot ladder. As you say Sarah it does irritate the skin and is I think illegal to grow.

Nice composition - but this plant is a nuisance, and seems to spread very quickly. We have quite a lot of this growing beside the River Ouse a few miles north of York.

Wow! It looks huge! Good composition.

@if1 I hope they keep it in bounds here. I don't advocate growing it - I think it is illegal to do so - that and Japanese knotweed.
