Early, outside with the dog, I turned and saw it. Not quite a crescent. Maybe a half? Cradled by the branches of the big, old white oak. First rays of sun snuck around the house trying to steal the show, but no. “Not just yet,” said defiant moon. When moon takes away breath, memory etches. I had to linger, and this had to be my shot for today.
I made this image purely out of an emotional response to the moon; but in studying it in light of this week's Flash of Red February lesson, I see how the silhouette emphasizes the shapes, forms, and lines. I also see the high tonal contrast resulting from the deep black and bright white and the low tonal range resulting from the minimal amount of mid-tones.
I like viewing this image best on the black background.
Really nice positioning to catch the moon between the limbs - not an easy thing to do. It does surprise me that you can get some really interesting moon shots in the early morning. Tried some a few weeks ago when we had the full moon. the silhouetted tree is wonderful. Nice job with the b&w.
@milaniet Thank you, Milanie! When I turned and saw the moon right there, perfectly framed by the branches, I was delighted! I stayed out there just watching for quite a while.
@paulaw Thank you, Paula! I am trying to learn a bit about black and white by participating in the Flash of Red February theme, and I'm concentrating primarily on tonal range and contrast this week. There's lots to learn, but I'm enjoying the process! :-)
@gracefullyetched Thank you so much for commenting on my pictures today and for the follow! I appreciate your time and your interest in my project. So very, very kind of you! :-)
