Looks Can Be Deceiving

This might look like the trunk of a tree; but to a squirrel living here on this hill with us, it serves as a throne. Perched like royalty on that little stub of branch-long-gone, a squirrel often basks in the sun and surveys its kingdom. Below, a little stream quenches thirst; and a beautiful, young girl with a bow in her hair offers two bowls heaped high with sunflower seeds and peanuts. (Who cares if she’s concrete? She’s very generous.) A stand of hemlocks provides fluffy branches for lining nests, and acres of nut-producing trees satisfy hunger. Oak, hickory, beech, black walnut — what more could a hungry squirrel ask for? Daily life here on the hill includes checking the stub, er, throne for a king. Squirrels live the good life here, and watching them brings us such joy!

I like viewing this image best on the black background.
Fabulous light and textures.

Ah yes, the "perch throne" every squirrel occupied yard has one. Love your narrative! Good shot.

It sounds like squirrel paradise, and I'm sure your family makes it even more so by providing food and simply by being people who show respect and kindness to the natural world. I like the texture and light and dof in this shot.

you make a plain ordinary tree trunk take on a whole new different meaning, fabulous commentary Janet.

You have waxed lyrical about the throne such that it's a squirrel's life for me next time.

OMG...Love this! I read your caption aloud to Ken, and before I was half-way through, he said, "I think you've found a new friend!" I agree we might have a lot in common, starting with appreciation for the little things, gratitude for small life around us, and a desire to translate that into thoughtful prose in which to wrap a picture...
