Yesterday, we all took a delightful ride down the hill and along the railroad tracks running parallel to the Allegheny River. There, on a small island just before the dam, a large sycamore tree houses a Great Blue Heron rookery. Gazing out at the island, we saw nearly two dozen Herons tending about a dozen nests!
In and out the Herons flew, necks kinked and legs stretching behind in flight. With 500 heavy millimeters aimed out the open window and resting on the rear view mirror, I captured all blurry shots; but who cares? Despite the blur, this image brings back the amazing experience of watching these elegant birds on a lovely Easter day with my family — and two dogs!
Thank you for your recent comments and favs! I greatly appreciate you taking the time to visit my project and support my photographic endeavors. So, so very kind of you! :-)
Wow! I see the Herons from time to time flying solo for the most part. For some reason I never gave a thought to them having a rookery somewhere in the area. Great that you found them. Nice shot.
I've seen herons many times up in Nova Scotia, but I've never seen one nesting! It;s amazing that, large bodies and all, they can build and nest on those delicate limbs! I'm delighted you had such a good time observing them...such a nice thing to share with family...as well as the four-legged ones!
They do look slightly comical perched up so high. Somehow a bit oversized for the smallish branches they have built their nests on! Super capture Janet.
