Poor hummer got soaked - it hailed then rained - she sat there a bit and then took off for the shelter in the rhododendron. I have been filling this feeder every two days. They like it better than the other two feeders I have in the back yard. I do smile when I see pictures of humming birds all clustered around one feeder. The ones I have here are combative with each other and don't like to share.
On a sad note, a chestnut backed chickadee flew hard into my office window. I ran outside to pick him up before the cats saw him, and was able to gently pick him up without resistance. I thought maybe he was dazed. Sadly though, he didn't make it. Occasionally a bird will hit a window but not that hard.
@nanalisarocks - thanks Lisa! Yes - a female rufous I believe. Sweet feisty little things.
I was reading that the rufous in particular are very territorial.
