Another foggy/drizzly/rainy dull one. I spotted this gate on the way into town. Looks like it hasn't been closed in a while given the position and obvious age of that tree.
I spent the morning traipsing round trying to get the surprisingly elusive ingredients for the not particularly exotic dessert that I am making for Sunday afternoon when we have somewhere between 20 and 30 people coming round to watch the rugby. (Happy Mothers' Day!)
Fortunately Sainsburys came up trumps with two of the things that Tesco had failed in, but I scoured the town for the chocolate liqueur Creme de Cacao to no avail so I am going to have to improvise I guess.
After I had spent about 45 minutes in Sainsburys I got to my car to discover that I had had about two feet of baling twine hanging out of my coat pocket. I must have looked such a country bumpkin. Next time I think I will put a piece of straw between my teeth to complete the look. And to think I used to be something of a city slicker!
When I got home the dog was fast asleep. She is getting increasingly deaf these days, so whereas she used to be on red alert which resulted in wild barking at all times, these days she often doesn't wake up when someone comes through the door. I called her name when I got in and she still didn't wake up so I walked over to her. On first glance it looked like she was in her twitching, eye-rolling, subdued yelping final throes which put me into an bit of a panic. I gave her a bit of a prod and she woke up it became apparent that she must have been mid-dream. Bloomin' animals!
I spotted three chickens coming out of the fog when I walked across the allotments on the way to feeding the pigs. After checking they weren't ours I called their owners' mother. So hopefully they were put away before either getting eaten by the ever-present fox, or digging up too much of peoples' plots on the allotments. Now that is something that wouldn't go down too well with the allotment holders.
Spent the rest of the day cooking.
Three good things:
Off to the pub tonight to celebrate with a friend of ours who has just got a job after being out of work for some time. Great news!
Most of the food preparation for Sunday already done, so I can apply myself to finishing off de-skanking the house tomorrow.
I remembered to post the Mothers Day cards in time (not something I am usually very good at)
TBBTB:- feeders almost all almost empty, must do a bit of topping up tomorrow.
Sounds like one of those days. Hope the cooking goes well but if people are focussed on the rugby you never know what u could get away with.
Love the photo and agree it has been a miserable day in Herts and think you have clicked a good shot
Great shot of a gate! I took a similar one some time ago and I love these dilapidated structures! They had dragged mine shut the other day much to my amazement! Lovely soft colours here, looks like you had the mist too.
love it. it welcomes me right on in and through it...the fog, an added bonus. and goodness me, about the barbed wire out of your pocket and the temptation for you to put straw between your teeth to add to the look.... hilARious.
This is a lovely composition Jan and I'm glad you got most of your shopping that you wanted. I'm sure they will all enjoy whatever you make for Sunday. Glad to hear that your friend has got a job too - that must be such a relief in this economic climate. Have fun and get everyone else to do the clearing up!
Nice misty shot... hating the grey dull wet weather of the last day or so...
Really enjoying your "diary" entries on each of your shots... Sounds like a busy weekend ahead.... especially Mothers Day... hope you are treated to breakfast in bed on Mothers Day before the hard work begins.... ♥
Great shot! It reminds me of a security gate I saw in Cyprus. Bolted, chained and a thumping great, rusty padlock with a big "No Entry!" sign wired to it. The fact that there was no fencing either side of the gate for some distance makes no difference!
@steampowered haha that is funny Paul, there is a house near here that I have been meaning to photograph for some time with gates at the end of the drive but no hedge or fence either side. Just worried about the owners coming out and asking what i am doing
@markyl no Mark. Had a think about it and decided I am going to try and spend more time trying to get things right in camera before I spend time learning a new editing package. One day tho!
You can't call yourself a country woman with out a pocket full of orange baler twine Jan!!! Love your stories as much as the photo!!! Not much rest for you on MD then! Very pretty picture of the old gate.
Sounds like a restful Mother's Day for you!! De-skanking, love it!! and I just love love this shot, there is something about gates!! and your mist , well and our mist too!!!!A late fav from me, bit of a catchup as too busy yessterday,
a fav for me - and I love your commentry - made me chuckle about the twine hanging form your pocket! Hope tomorrow goes well - sounds a bit hectic to me...though having said that, I'm cooking a big roast for my Mum, bit also for the hoardes who are putting in a surprise appearance for her! mine could be as chaotic!!
You come alive in your words.....a subdued picture.... a softness.... love the trail of words.... the aromas if food, the scour for ingredients, a day-dreaming dog, a celebration, a mother's day card......i see a lot more....so much thought....
Hope the de-skanking went to plan (did a bit myself this weekend, but not enough) and - crucially - that you found an adequate creme de cacao replacement. That sounds like a dessert I'd have been interested in.
Was lying prone on sofa yesterday with the laptop balanced on my belly like an otter, skimming idly through pics, and was looking at this/reading your blurb when JB walked past and (v unusually) stopped and commented on how lovely it was. Reminds him of home, he said.
It IS lovely. Just the right touch of bloomy soft.
I know I'm late but Fav! Love it. And very entertained by your shenanagins! Poor dog - shame ours does wild barking at so many random things that I ignored him wild barking at the genuine burglar!
