grass snakes by jantan

grass snakes

Glanced through the kitchen doors this morning and spotted three grass snakes climbing up a stone wall by our pond. The longest one was about four feet long. I am not sure exactly what they were up to as they were just hanging there, but I think that they may have been mating.
wow

Amazing capture, never seen any myself, only an adder! .
It must be spring !!

Amazing capture - thankfully your camera was close by! Well done.

Ha ha !! at first I was amazed at what seemed to be tree or sapling roots -- then read the title and had a closer look ! They must be enjoying the sun ! Super capture Jan !

They are definitely mating...do your snakes (they look like our garter snakes) band up together in a hole over winter? Ours do and then they all emerge, so if you know where one of their caves are you can often see bunches like this in spring.
Great capture...not a sight you get to see very often.

Nifty capture! No snakes here today; the temps are still too low to tempt them out of hibernation.

Brillient capture, by the time had got my camera this would have disappered

Great shot, almost looks like roots at first glance, then a second and you see them entwined. You were quick with the camera, Nice job.

Amazing shot .....would be absolutely petrified if I saw these in my garden...there would be no more weeding for me! Shame though as they are rather beautiful in their own way.......great capture Jan.

Well it looks like they're up to something! My money is on the big one being a female. My sister heard terrifying screams from the garden one day and made her friend traipse round to venture out with her (they both had toddler twins at the time). The friend was grumpy and sceptical so Carole was relived when she idly moved a dustbin and found a massive grass snake with a frog in its mouth. The frog was screaming (it escaped).

@happypat When we went to my friend in Somerset a couple of years ago Monty was running around in the long grass with Nigel in pursuit (playing a game of 'tire out the dog') when my friend pointed out that it was full of adders. Game over!

gee-amazing shot! great reaction in getting your camera. They do look like roots and when you said snakes I thought you were kidding!
April 15th, 2014
@judithg oh wow, a nightmare...us northerners are very wimpy!
April 15th, 2014
Fabulous capture. They certainly were not bothered by you taking pics of them!
April 15th, 2014
It's relatively rare to see snakes in a domestic garden because they are so timid - you were very lucky, I'm envious

@judithg
I've heard those screams too! http://365project.org/roachling/365/2013-05-02

Fantastic shot Jan! I'd guess it's a female with two males. We have grass snakes too, they came to our pond and ate all the great crested newts, one protected species wiping out another lol!

We get them every year Pete, but I think we have a pretty ideal set up for them with a garden with two ponds which backs onto fields where we have muck heaps made from our donkey muck where they hibernate and lay their eggs

crazy stuff! oh the joys of country life! ;-)

Oh my goodness! This makes me feel slightly sick looking a this.....I'm really not good with snakes. I had to click on it though as I thought they were roots....I saw your title, but thought no way could these be snakes in the UK. How wrong I was! Amazing capture, but I'm relieved they aren't living in my garden.

Snakes in the back yard is something I'd rather avoid. Great capture of an unusual event.

Well here's a unique capture! I'm envious. The snakes are gorgeous, the weather is sunny and you have flowers blooming! Everything to make a fantastic photo, and you did.
April 16th, 2014
Oh dear, they are huge - the cats bring in small ones but luckily I haven't come across one that size! Very well caught!
