Lycoperdon pyriforme

Pear-shaped puffball fungi which often grow in compact masses on rotting wood. It is apparently considered a choice edible mushroom when young (as these are) and the flesh is white - but although I'm a great forager I draw the line at wild mushrooms.
Great find and a wonderful shot! We have a similar one, but it is NOT edible.

I don't blame you; I think safe fungi foraging requires in-depth, specialist knowledge.

We used to pick and eat common mushrooms but not any more. I've never seen these before, good find
