Tapestry

It is the Feast of our Lady's Assumption, a holy day of obligation, and one of the advantages of my new venue in downtown Los Angeles is being able to duck out at lunch for Mass as the cathedral, a truly impressive edifice that combines modern architecture and LA's Hispanic heritage. Along the walls of the main nave are these tapestries depicting saints through history created by artist John Nava. Throughout the ages, large scale pictorial wall cycles have served as one of the most effective forms of literary expression, vividly telling the stories of the Greeks, Romans, Medieval and Renaissance periods. Twenty-five fresco-like tapestries depict 135 saints and blesseds from around the world, including holy men and women of North America canonized by the Church. Twelve untitled figures, including children of all ages, represent the many anonymous holy people in our midst. An impressive sight.
These tapestries look to be lovely, what a wonderful thing that you get to see and visit them.
