Angels Flight by jaybutterfield

Angels Flight

My first ride of the newly refurbished and reopened Angel's Flight in downtown LA.

For those of you not familiar with it, Angels Way is located at California Plaza and goes down to the Grand Central Market. The 116-year-old landmark takes passengers on a 762 mm narrow gauge funicular railway on its two cars, Sinai and Olivet, running in opposite directions on a shared cable on the 91 m long inclined railway. Originally opened in 1901, Angels Flight — the world’s shortest railway — has given more than 100 million rides along its hillside track.
Originally, when Bunker Hill was one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in Los Angeles the cars ferried prominent citizens up and down the steep slope between Hill and Olive streets. The landmark was dismantled for “urban renewal” of the area in 1969. In the early 1990s, the Railway was refurbished and relocated a half-block south, reopening adjacent to California Plaza in 1996. It was decommissioned again in early 2000s but refurbished again and reopened last week.

It's a Los Angeles icon and worth the $1 fare.
How cool! I think I may have ridden on this in the late 50'-early 60's...foggy recollection. It reminds me of a funicular. I looked it up, it is a funicular! I also rode one in Quebec City.

I have heard of this before and possibly even seen it but not in this colorful rendition in for sure. So glad they have chosen to refurbish and keep it. Such historical part of the city

This s a great photo and great POV. Like the newly painted brightness of it. We love this old thing.... I grew up riding it every time we got into LA from Whittier....have ridden it many times, the last time just before it went out of service for this rehab. I remember, especially, several rides ..... We went to LA to get our marriage license in early November, 1960. John had never ridden it. We rode it up and down several times.
