The BAe 146 / Avro RJ is also known as "Jumbolino" for its similarity with a small 747 ( Jumbo ). The surfaces opened on the rear side are the speed brakes that help airplane reduce speed while it is approaching to the runway.

Oh, the things you can learn on 365. As much as I fly, I'm inside the plane so I never realized there was a rear side braking system at all! Beautifully crisp capture.
