New South Wales Christmas Bush by jeneurell

New South Wales Christmas Bush

My father grew a Christmas bush in Sydney when I was a child, but it wasn't until last Christmas when they bloomed locally that I realised I could grow one in Queensland. I bought a little NSW Christmas Bush (Ceratopetalum gummiferum) and planted it in the front garden. A week or so ago it came out in little white flowers. I am quite pleased to see that those little white flowers are turning into slightly bigger pink ones! I think it is a bit early for Xmas though.
A delicate and sweet flower, the colors are Christmas colors.

Gorgeous dainty flowers.

@theredcamera @ludwigsdiana @onewing Thank you for the comment on my Christmas Bush - I now know that the tiny white blooms are the actual flowers and the better known red ones are bracts.

I love this! Did you use a normal lens on your Nikon for this?

@marlboromaam The lens I usually use on my Nikon D800 is a Nikkor 24-120mm one, but I used a 50mm prime lens which goes down to f1.4 (the other one only goes to f4) for this shot to get the very small depth of field.

@jeneurell Thank you for that info! The one I'm looking at comes with an 18-55mm and I'm wondering how small I can get with it and if I'll have to get right on top of my subject to shoot it in focus. I won't be happy if I have to get right on top with it and I've heard you have to do that with the macro tube extensions. I won't be able to afford an actual macro lens after buying the camera and bundle for a long while.

@marlboromaam I've never had a dedicated macro either. Would like one though. The Nikon Coolpix P900 has macro built in, but in reality I take most close ups with my phone. The 18-55mm is more on the wide angle end. I've used macro tube extensions but not with a great deal of luck! How close you can get usually tends to depend on how close your camera will focus if it doesn't have a macro facility.

@jeneurell The camera I've been using is my little old Kodak. It has an optical viewfinder, optical zoom, shoots in black and white or color, shoots decent video, and shoots in macro mode with the push of a button. The trouble with it is, it only shoots 10mp images and it won't get down to the tiny minute details of moss with a sharp crisp focus and other things I'd like to shoot. When I got it over 10 years ago, I never intended to use it for a project like 365. LOL! I can't remember how I ended up here and with a cheap digital Kodak camera when everyone else was shooting with the big expensive ones. It acts like a film camera and that's what I loved about it. I can't stand the new mirrorless cameras they're selling now. No viewfinder and you can't see your subject on the screen in bright sunlight. To shoot macros - you have to be right on top of your subject and who wants to get on top of a bee?! I appreciate your info. It helps to get another opinion as well. I've been using my phone also. I have a phoneography album I put those shots in. =)
