There's a popular declutter book that says to keep only those possessions that "spark joy." Well this little aluminum sailboat sculpture is one of those that sparks joy for me. I bought it in a gift shop at the top of Grouse Mountain (at least I think that's the name) in Vancouver during an epic (to me anyway) cross-country drive when I was in my twenties. Brings back sweet memories every time I look at it.
This shape is a very nice design. Not the attempt to produce a naturalistic image, but a formally convincing shape was the idea here. The result is a powerful and artistically impressive form.
At first glance, I thought it was a glazed clay work. And I wondered a bit, that such a form has survival. But I could imagine that this shape was made of clay and then a metal casting was made. One almost thinks of feeling a forming hand in soft material.
Does this aluminum have a special surface coating? Ordinary aluminum becomes dull and does not actually shine as it does on this picture. How big is this sculpture? What about stability?
It's nice when objects awaken beautiful memories. Unfortunately, I can only talk about the beautiful shape... :)
