The ensembles of the town houses and the extensive castle area make an architectural treasure. More than one million foreign visitors come to Krumau (with 13,000 inhabitants) every year. Especially in the summer many tourists are in the city. But off the castle, there are quieter, not so crowded places.
On the picture you can see the castle tower - maybe the most famous landmark of Krumau. The building dates from the Gothic, but is finished in the style of the Renaissance. You can - for a fee - walk up and enjoy the view of the town in the circulating arcade.
Oh my golly, that's a heck of a lot of visitors Jerome. What do the locals think about that influx? This shot really captures the ambience of this beautiful old city packed with tourists in the busy season.
you managed to get the tourists to contribute handsomely to the picture. I wonder how long you waited until the lady in the hat stepped into the frame to give the perfect balance and reference to the castle tower beyond?
Again, great sense of scale in this. I think I'd feel rather overwhelmed by the archtiecture if I was walking along that street. Looks like a marvellous place to visit, though.
@carolscho Vielen Dank, dass du dir Zeit genommen hast, das Bild genauer zu betrachten. Solche Details wie das reflektierte Licht vom Fenster im Dunkel der schattigen Mauern sind für mich hübsche Stellen.
@dulciknit Thanks for your kind comment, Alison!
I have been to Krumlov several times already. I like to go there more often. With a photo you can capture some impressions - but the actual atmosphere opens up only when you walk through the place on foot.
@helenhall It always surprises me how carefully you look at a picture. From this point I made a series of pictures. Of course, people in the foreground play a role. The lady with the hat was a gift that I gladly accepted. As you put it very elegantly, the bright hat and light dress are a pretty counterpart to the tower, and there is a pictorial relationship of the front and the back.
@milaniet You're right, Milanie.
When I first visited Krumau more than 20 years ago, it was still rather unknown. Since then, this city has been marketed touristically and now, especially in the summer months, many tourists come there. Of course, this is about a lot of money. I just hope that the authentic of the city does not suffer too much.
@golftragic Mmmh ... What do the inhabitants think about the annual flood of people? - A good question. I suspect that they are happy about the bonanza that brings them tourism. In the years of communism the economic conditions were certainly difficult. But I think the inhabitants of Krumlau are just as happy, when the city belongs to them again in the cold season.
@jerome Sounds like a familiar story in all places which attract lots of tourists. Lots of seaside towns within easy drive from here are absolutely flooded with campers, holiday-makers and day-trippers in the summer. the locals call them 'the thrip' (a small insect that is found in swarms in summer). Those who make money like the flood of people, those who don't hate the inconvenience.

So you're a mountaineer too - how beautiful!
Krumau has some lovely places. It is a charming little town.
