glacier hike

Dachstein - the highest mountain of Upper Austria. Some of my dear followers know him from previous photos. You see the Hallstatt Glacier, which pushes up steeply to his slope. The tiny "ants": these are tourers. Some of them will probably want to climb the summit. In winter, even with this magnificent mountain weather, this is far too risky for me. This starts with the glacier, which has fissures that winter snow just makes invisible, but not necessarily loadable. And climbing in a snowy and icy slope - I do not. And it is a bad risk under these circumstances, if you are alone along the way. In summer, the risk is much lower and the enjoyment greater. So far, I have climbed the summit twice. In the winter I prefer to stay on the glacier and enjoy the scenery and the moment.

You are smart, Jerome. Unfortunately I know someone who was killed in an avalanche. A great outdoors person and deeply missed by his community. The lure of such a beautiful mountain is hard to resist.

I think it was Stephen Hawking who said we are just quarks in this huge universe. This photo reminded me of our insignificance.

It does look amazing. The hikers really help to realise just how huge it all is. Beautiful image and processing.

@jerome Ich danke dir sehr.
March 25th, 2018
A superlative edit, as always, and I do so agree with you about winter alpine adventures...
March 25th, 2018

@moonmtn Yes, you feel small and insignificant when you are in the mountains, in the vastness of the landscape. At the same time, you feel secure in a larger whole.
The mountains teach you a lot...
March 25th, 2018
@jerome Ja, 16!

@juliedduncan That's very nice if you have such sensations as well. A picture just provides colours and shapes, but the experience of hiking a mountain goes much further. The whole person is busy - with hearing, feeling, smelling, tasting, with his legs, his arms, in the depth and height of space,... Not least thoughts flow, connecting with the emotions and the physical being. I always hope that my pictures tell at least a glimmer of this experience.

@365karly1 I am very sorry for your friend, who died in an avalanche. In the Austrian mountains, according to alpine accident statistics, in 2017, 283 people were fatally injured. And there were 7,807 injured. The main reasons for accidents include overconfidence, overstraining and lack of tour planning. But even experienced mountain guides are killed in an accident. A tiny mistake can be fatal.
On my tours I try to understand the mountain. I also reversed prematurely when I realized that the weather conditions are not favourable. Daring in the mountains can cost you your life.

Stunning, beautiful and dramatic!! Gorgeous photo.
March 26th, 2018
What a beautiful capture! I would be interested to know how you put the 8 photos together and how you shot them. This is too tall to be a pano image... one shot after the other, left to right (or right to left). How did you shoot your 8 images? One problem that I have with panos is that they are long and narrow - the viewer loses a lot of detail in the image. I would appreciate understanding how you created this lovely image (when you have time). Thanks!

@rosiekerr @rosiekerr
Dear Rosie, thank you for your nice comment!
How to make a panorama was described in an earlier photo ( https://365project.org/jerome/365/2018-02-17 ).
If you use specified programs for composing the photos, then the order does not matter - the program automatically finds the right arrangement. So that a pano does not become long and narrow, you can make the photos upright and then combine them (as shown in the link). But you can also shoot one above the other and put the single photos for the pano "planar" on the subject.
I hope I have served you with my remarks. Please do not hesitate if you want more information.
