Starling Murmuration by jesika2

Starling Murmuration

We had been told that Starlings were roosting about 6 miles from York so set off this evening to try to find them. We discovered the village they had chosen was much bigger than we thought and were beginning to think we had missed our chance when suddenly, as we were driving, I spotted some. Then more. Then even more. The sky was black with dancing birds, possibly 15-20,000 creating shapes in the sky as they danced and swooped. Then it was all over - they plunged from the skies in the gathering gloom into the distant trees, huddled together for warmth and safety leaving the two of us mesmerised with disbelief at the magnificent display.

So very pleased you found them! Aren't they amazing?

@fbailey I have never seen anything quite like it. TV doesn't do them justice. We'd been driving around for what seemed like hours, asking different people where to go, getting lost in a huge estate. The usual thing. And finally success, an astonishing and wonderful display of birdie ballet.

@susie1205 @stevepo Thank you, Susie, Steve. This is taken from video. We've just found out one of Hubby's pals sees them every evening - we might have to invite ourselves to his house...LOL
Thank you both again

wow so many - this is a terrific capture :)

@koalagardens Many thanks. Some sites have even more birds, but we were overjoyed with 15-20,000. The sky was suddenly dark with birds wheeling overhead as more & more congregated. Then as the sun went down, so did they. Astonishing, heart stopping & flipping cold!
A sight to treasure. Thank you again

Well seen and caught

@joev @jgpittenger I'd seen murmurations on TV, the shapes the birds create as they dance in the sky but never expected to see one in person. If you have time & interest, I am sure your computer will find video clips for you if you ask it nicely. Our display took about 15 minutes. Absolutely amazing and so very cold!
Many thanks for your comments.

Wow! What an amazing display to experience first hand! Love this photo viewed on black! I'm putting this on my bucket list! :-)

@gaylewood Thank you, Gayle. It's a sight OFF our bucket list now but we hope to go back on Saturday evening. It's hard to explain a murmuration the only way is to see one, in person if possible or on video if not. I hope you manage to find one.
Many thanks for your comment and for deciding to follow my project - which will pick up when the insects reappear.

@oldjosh Brilliant show, isn't it? We'd hoped to go back this weekend but the weather threatens to put paid to that. Hopefully they will stay a bit longer and we'll get a second chance.
Many thanks
