York floods several times a year but the Christmas 2015 event was huge. Centuries ago the area underwater was a swamp where the Foss and Ouse met.
The Victorians, in their mania for tidying decided to remove the walls. Fortunately author Sir Walter Scott, artist William Etty and other influential persons convinced them to leave things be.

Thank you all. York is very much used to floods, but we don't normally have this area under water. Fortunately although many homes & businesses were inundated, no lives were lost.

Gorgeous shot, view and reflections. York is one place in the Uk I woud ove to visit one day. I have been 4 times in Scotland, many times in the British midlands and the closest I came to York is when I spent 3 days in the Lake District.
@koalagardens Hundreds of years ago, the walls were protected by a deliberate moat except around this area, a swamp where the 2 rivers met. This moat was most definitely unintended. One wonders what will happen when the 650 homes are built on the flood plain...
Thank you

@julienne1 Beautiful to look at but definitely NOT beautiful for those affected. I wanted to go to Clifford's Tower, only a few hundred yards away but couldn't find a way past the flood. Those who approached from different directions got some super pictures of the Tower reflected in the water.
Thanks, Julienne
