11 Sneaky

Tilly took me for my short morning walkies and in the 20 minutes we were out, the caterpillar seen in number 10 decided to pupate. Sneaky little caterpillar. Over the next 2 weeks, the chrysalis will harden, the changes, already underway, will continue as imaginal discs and enzymes transform a caterpillar into a beautiful Brimstone butterfly. About 24-36 hours before eclosion (emerging) the chrysalis will become transparent and I will watch very carefully, getting cameras set up to record the wonderful event - which will happen when I'm not looking!!!

@koalagardens The shape will remain basically unchanged but detail will gradually appear as the chrysalis hardens- and so will photos.

It is amazing how quickly that process happens - can't turn your back on them at all. Really nice shot of this stage.

@milaniet This stage takes 20-30 minutes of extreme activity. Eclosion (emergence) takes about 2 for the butterfly to escape the pupal shell and it should have its wings fully inflated in about 5 minutes. Then a few hours for the wings to harden before it's released.
