Comma by jesika2

Comma

Sunny today and the butterflies are out. 10 Red Admiral, a Tortoiseshell and this Comma, the only one to pose properly.

@koalagardens @lastrami_ thank you both very much. USA has a very similar butterfly called Question Mark. The shape is highly distinctive. j

Thank you for the interesting information, I asked google for a photo of the Question Mark - it is also very beautiful! I never saw this kind of butterfly in germany, probably they don't live here.

The Red Admirals and Commas are only occasional encounters, but man, I never see Tortoiseshells!

Isn't it the truth about them posing!?!

@rhoing I know USA (is that where you are, Monarch suggests there or Canada) has Red Admiral & your Question Mark is very like our Comma, but not sure about Small Tortoiseshell. ST is in a very serious decline, once one of our most common butterflies its numbers have plummeted & no-one really knows why. There is a parasite, Sturmia Bella, but that can't explain what is happening. j

A brushfooted with very different upper and lower wing surface patterns. You've capture the stunning side here!

@rhoing He's gorgeous but the subtle colours on the newly eclosed butterfly are beautiful too.
Thank you, j
