The Coast Guard visited our school, which is over 1,000 miles from Anchorage. They came to assist in our cold water safety classes and arrived in a helicopter. It's still hard for me to wrap my head around how amazing this is for our small village students. School was dismissed early so we could all go outside and watch, as they graciously circled the school and then, lo and behold, actually landed right behind the school. The kids were beside themselves with excitement. I've been up here 10 years and every day I gain tremendous insights into this very different lifestyle.
