Llandudno Bay: 6pm

Wales. We walk to the sea: breathing clean air, watching the children run on tussocky hillside, beneath ancient ruins. By the water I see oystercatchers, a curlew, a flock of widgeon.
But the onshore wind feels bitter, and the kids are cold even paddling. The prospect of a long wet walk back is unappealing.
We trek back dry, and drive into Llandudno, across the way.
By now the sun is low behind us, the headland glows with the last of it, and the sky is streaked pink.
The town shelters us from the wind.
I swim hurriedly but elated. New waters.
It takes me a long time to warm up.
