I thought it was time to take the valentine my nieces sent me off the fridge, but didn’t want to waste the temporary tattoo that came with it. My wish for all little girls is that their princess stage, should they have one, is very short. This photo was harder to do than I thought it would be and I gave up trying to get the tattoo in focus. I was manually selecting the autofocus point and then trying to stand in the right spot. Ya right. Maybe using full manual focus would’ve worked better, or a smaller f-stop…? The tattoo wasn't really that sharp to begin with…it went on a little wrinkley.
I'm currently situated in Victoria, having previously lived in Beijing, Halifax, Chilliwack, Calgary, Vancouver and growing up in Northwestern Ontario. My aim with photography is...
I don't know what your camera can do, but I figured out on mine that I select area focus and then I can move the focal point. With it fixed in one spot it's easier to sit in the right place. My auto focus is very irregular!
Good picture though! What is the tattoo of?
@triciaknuts ~ That is what I tried, toggling my focal point and positioning myself accordingly....maybe it was the turning backwards that was my issue. Hard to tell what part of the body is in front of what part of the camera! It is Snow White, the oldest of the lot.
@triciaknuts@jgoldrup grr! i'm having the same issue - can't seem to get the focus right when doing selfies! i've started using a stickie note in my place, but then the lighting can be off and the focus is still typically off by a few inches at least.....if anyone has suggestions??
either way Janna, this is cute! I loved your photos of your nieces. very cute girls!
so ok.. lets the critique begin... so I like the composition and the lovely soft tones of the shot and the story behind is so so cute! (and think about it you used up the tattoo but you will have this photo as a reminder forever!) and I dont like the.... and the.. is somewhat... hmmm.. nope.. nothing this one seems pretty uncritiqueable!! (yes i just made up a new word..)
I actually like that this is in soft focus, it looks nice. before I read the caption I thought this was a real tattoo and although I don't know you I was trying not to judge your tattoo choice, lol. not that there is anything wrong with princess tattoos.... um... this would indeed be very difficult to focus though. i think i would put it on auto and hope for the best, lol. is that snow white?
@laurentye Yep, it is SW. I would never get a princess tattoo for real. The closest I have to that is a ladybug. Kinda girly, I guess. It was my first, though, and I like that males are called ladybugs too. ;)

Janna- I like the soft focus, but have you tried hooking your camera up to the computer and shooting with the "EOS Utility" remote? It is part of the bundled software that comes with Canon cameras and as long as you can reach your mouse, you can focus and shoot the camera from your computer. That is how I made my profile pic.
I like the soft tones in this. At first I thought you might be your entry for the crappy tattoo challenge:) So cute that your nieces gave you this! I'm with @kidatheart , I didn't have a princess phase either!
Dale, I didn't think of that. Sounds a bit too tech-savvy for me, but maybe someday I will dig out the equipment and have a go at it...if I can't grow another set of long arms first.
I've also used my laptop and EOS utility for selfies. Super simple and if you have a cordless mouse, you can put the laptop/camera-combo further away and still use the mouse to do some shooting. Anyway, I like the softness in this picture and actually would've liked to see the pic without the tat and maybe a little bit more of the hand.
@janmaki ~ Oh, it's super simple? Well, Dale didn't mention that part. I will try very hard to dig that stuff out and use it for a good selfie sometime. No cordless mouse, but I'll make it a close-range one. Then I can add all the amount of hand I want into the photo. The hand amount was totally random in this one - couldn't have controlled it if I tried!
I think it turned out beautifully! I never had a princess stage... I never played with barbies, but loved disney movies. I wanted to be Arielle, because she could breathe underwater. That's the closest I got to princess ;)!
