Simply looking at the way in which the rose and bud stands out, I would say that it does work. However, that are numerous unnatural, sharp lines in the unfocused and uncoloured background which really distracts from the actual subject and I would guess that they were less distracting in the original version.
I think Eric said it well...I do love the way the tones in the petals come out -- almost like satin. I wonder if a brush to blur the background a bit would take care of what we're picking up on. Just lowering the clarity of that would make a difference.
My first thought was I wonder what this would look like printed on the metallic finish - like the tones of the background and wouldn't have thought about any changes, but perhaps what Taffy suggested would provide a better background. Do love the rose.
I, too, like the satiny finish and sheen on the flower, but agree with @ericdibosco about the lines in the background. @taffy's suggestion is a good one... can you soften them in LR or (better yet) PS? Overall, a lovely effect.
