Sea Turtle Heading Back In Black and White by jgpittenger

Sea Turtle Heading Back In Black and White

When we were in Hawaii, I saw some shots of sea turtles in black and white. It would never have occurred to me to do a b and w conversion, but I decided to try it. I fear that the detail in the rocks and surf pull the eye too much away from the turtle. What do you think? Suggestions? Must be viewed on black for full appreciation
Thanks for your visits, comments, suggestions, favs
I agree...the contrast in textures on the turtle isn't enough to make him pop, and he loses out to the bright tones on the surf and the darker textures on the rocks. One thought would be to create a texture out of the scene behind so that you could adjust its tone, and then merge the turtle back into the scene but where he'd stand out more. Or maybe use a texture on top of the scene to soften the background but show what it is, and then layer the turtle back in by masking out the other layers so he shows up more?

@taffy Great suggestion. I'll try it in a couple days when I'm not in the midst of trying to reorganize my backup system

What a great find. I do think he blends in just a little too well though in b&w. Be interesting to see you try Taffy's suggestion.

Wonderful pic!

He does get lost in the shot a bit. I think Taffy's suggestion is good, and I look forward to seeing how you go.

I like the idea of B&W, too, but agree he is getting lost in the texture of the water. I like Taffy's idea and will be curious how it might affect the tones here.

I agree about how he is lost in the other textures and tones of the moving water. I can think of several more complex ways to solve the problem, mostly in Photoshop. Looking forward to see how (if at all) you can change up the result.

Wonderful image Jane. I love the highlights that frame the shot and evoke energy.

I love this, and although I see what other commenters mean when they say the turtle is lost in the texture of the water, I find I'm still able to see him well enough. I actually like the textures of both turtle and water seen together like this. To me it's a reminder and perhaps a symbol of how much the turtle and his environment are part of each other. I love it just as it is, and it's a fav for me. It also reminds me of one of my favourite films/books, "Turtle Diary".

I prefer this one I think. It's perhaps not a great one for black and white but keeping it more natural makes a more enjoyable image for me.
