We planned this trip to Hawaii a year ago before we knew about the new lava flow into the ocean that started about two months ago. When we heard that it was happening we tweaked our trip to add adventures around it. The helicopter tour was a bit of a disappointment but not so the boat approach. We rode in a pretty big metal sided catamaran that was able to get really close. Watching the lava explode as it hit the ocean with fragments bursting in air! WOW! You'll be seeing many more of my lava shots over the days ahead, but here is an appetizer. Worth viewing on black I think.
The volcano national park is 2 1/2 hours from where we are staying so I've been off line a while. I will get to your photos hopefully later today. Thanks for your visits, comments, suggestions, favs
What an incredible sight! The stream of red lava and the spray resulting from the collision with the water is amazing! Saw on the news that some people actually received burns resulting from an unexpected explosion of the volcano... glad you weren't there then!
WOW -- that is spectacular! What a flow, and check out the spray! We went late at night so had a completely different set of shots. We were awe-struck, too, with the boat rocking and feeling the heat of the lava. http://365project.org/jyokota/365/2016-09-23
