The good news first! It seems as if the problem with my external hard drive was a faulty usb port. Hooray! And thanks for everyone's concern and for your lovely response to yesterday's turtle. This little white crowned sparrow was singing its heart out when I went to Newport a couple of days ago. The background was a funky mottled gray building so I duplicated the layer in PS, used the multiply blend mode, and then masked out the sparrow and some of the branches in case anyone is interested in how I got a black background.
